Hawaii Day 3 - Warm Springs and Waterfalls (19.73, -155.07)

The ocean on the east side of the island is truly gnarly. It feels like the waves have been gaining momentum since they left the west coast of the US and all of that energy comes crashing into the first obstacle in their path, the eastern shore of the big island. There are not nice beaches on this side of the island for that reason. The ocean is too violent and big and cold. The water is the color of blue raspberry dum-dum sucker and after crashing against the jagged black cliffs that line the east coast, it stirs up foam making the ocean resemble a blue shark gummy (the ones with the white tummies).

Today was the first day we awake to sun. We spent the morning swimming in a warm spring pool that butted right up to the ocean. There were tropical fish swimming around on the sandy bottom and if you stood still, the water was so clear you did not even need goggles to watch them. I received further reassurance that I am indeed sweet and delicious as I was nibbled on repeatedly by the little fishes. Tina was not. Every so often a giant wave would crash over the wall that separated the pool from the sea and an icy cold wave would sweep across the pool.

The warm springs.

After soaking all morning, we continued north and hiked to and swam in a couple waterfalls, which included jungle bushwaking and all. Knowing that the island does not have snakes made that an easier task.

One of our many waterfalls.
